Sr Ts. Br. Dr. Asmawan bin Mohd Sarman is a senior academic at the Faculty of Engineering, Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) with over 24 years of experience spanning academia, industry practice, research, consultancy, and professional leadership in the built environment sector. He holds a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Architecture from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, a Master of Science in Construction Management (Civil Engineering) from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, a Bachelor of Building Surveying (Honours) from the University of Malaya, and a Diploma in Quantity Surveying from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia. He has been serving at Universiti Malaysia Sabah since 2005, contributing actively to teaching, postgraduate supervision, research, publication, industry engagement, and academic administration. Before joining academia, Dr. Asmawan gained extensive professional experience in the national and international construction industry, including roles as Contracts Manager, Quantity Surveyor, and Contracts Executive, with project involvement in Malaysia, Qatar, and Indonesia, notably in large-scale infrastructure and institutional developments. This diverse exposure enables him to integrate practical industry knowledge into engineering education and research. His research and professional expertise include Building Information Modelling (BIM), construction project management, contracts administration and claims, forensic building investigation, facility and asset management, and sustainable and green buildings. He has led and participated in numerous research grants and consultancy projects, particularly in BIM implementation for public infrastructure, smart hospitals, rural roads, heritage conservation, and government procurement systems. Dr. Asmawan has published widely in high-impact international journals indexed by Scopus and Web of Science, and is an active contributor to conferences, technical manuals, and professional training programmes. He is frequently invited as a keynote speaker, trainer, and panelist for BIM and construction management programmes at national and international levels. He is a Senior Member of the Royal Institution of Surveyors Malaysia (RISM), a Professional Technologist (Ts.) registered with MBOT, a Registered Builder (Br.) with ACCPM, and a certified BIM Coordinator and Trainer under CIDB Malaysia. His academic and professional contributions have been recognised through numerous excellence, innovation, and service awards at university, national, and ASEAN levels.
