Berhaman B. Ahmad is a distinguished forestry expert with a career spanning over three decades. He earned his PhD in Forestry from the University of Aberdeen, UK, in 2011, and was honored with the "Ahli Setia Darjah Kinabalu" by the Tuan Yang Terutama Negeri Sabah in 2016.
His professional journey began in 1992 as a forest botanist at the Sabah Forestry Department's Forest Research Centre. Since 1997, he has been a dedicated lecturer at Universiti Malaysia Sabah's (UMS) Faculty of Tropical Forestry. In June 2021, he was appointed to the prestigious Academic Chair, Professor of Forestry, Datuk Kelvin Tan Forestry Chair. He has held leadership roles, including Director of the UMS Ecocampus Centre (2019-2021) and Deputy Dean of the School of International Tropical Forestry. Notably, he has been instrumental in UMS's environmental and sustainability initiatives. As Director of the EcoCampus Management Centre, he led the university to a global ranking of 58th in the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings in 2019, highlighting UMS's commitment to eco-friendly practices.
Under his leadership, the UMS Landscape achieved significant success, culminating in UMS being recognized as Malaysia's most beautiful campus in the 2005 Landscape Competition. Berhaman is actively involved in NGOs, serving as a committee member of the Sabah Wetland Society and an Associate Fellow of the Academy of Science Malaysia. He has also represented Sabah on the Malaysian Timber Certification Council (MTCC).
In 2020, Berhaman spearheaded a project leading to a Memorandum of Agreement with Sime Darby Plantation Berhad. Subsequently, in 2022, a RM2 million research grant was secured from the Sime Darby Foundation. His research focuses on international collaborations in biodiversity conservation and reforestation plantation genetics. In 2018, he secured MOSTI grant for the "Ayam Penelor Ginseng" community development project (RM300,000.00). To date, his research grants exceed RM2.5 million.
In 2024, Berhaman is involved in three significant consultancy projects: 1). Advising on Hospital Universiti Malaysia Sabah's landscape development: This consultancy, valued at RM60,000.00, involves providing expert advice on the design and implementation of the hospital's landscape; 2) Leading an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) study for a trans-border road connecting Kalabakan, Sabah, to Simanggaris, Kalimantan, Indonesia. Worth RM45,000.00, entails conducting a comprehensive environmental assessment to identify potential impacts and mitigation measures for the proposed road, and 3) Botanist for the project upgrading Taman Tun Fuad at Bukit Padang, Kota Kinabalu, Sabah: As a botanist, Berhaman will contribute his expertise to the project, focusing on the botanical aspects of the park's upgrade (RM 40,000.00).
