Fakulti Sains Sosial dan Kemanusiaan, UMS

I am Associate Professor Dr Lee Kuok Tiung, currently serving in the Communication Programme, Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS). I obtained my Doctor of Philosophy (Journalism and Publishing) from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia in 2011. I am also an alumnus of UMS, where I obtained a Bachelor of Social Sciences (Hons) in Communication from UMS (2000) before obtaining a Master of Arts in Communication (2003).
Since joining UMS in 2004, I have served in various academic and administrative positions, including as Head of Programme (2020–2023). I am also the Deputy Commandant of the UMS Reserve Officers Training Unit (ROTU)/ PALAPES UMS with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel, reflecting my commitment to developing leadership, discipline, and national service among university students.
My teaching focuses on the core courses of the programme, namely Foundations of Communication, Communication Laws & Ethics, Communication Theories, Research Methods in Communication, and most recently Digital Media Literacy. My research interests focus on journalism studies, media framing, governance, and public communication, especially in the context of media and politics in Sabah and Malaysia.
Throughout my academic career, I have led and participated in various research projects funded by the government sector, like under the Ministry of Higher Education, the Prime Minister's Department, and Universiti Malaysia Sabah, and private sector like Centre for Independent Journalism (CIJ) covering topics such as media and democracy, the electoral system, implementation of Undi18, PLKN 3.0, and public sentiment on the Sulu issue. I have authored and co-authored over 80 academic publications, including articles indexed in the journals Scopus, WOS, and MyCite.
In addition to my academic work, I am actively consulted by the media to contribute opinions and analysis to national and regional outlets, both print newspapers, news portals, and TV channels, offering insights into political developments in Malaysia and Sabah. I am also a columnist for the news portal Suara Sarawak. My contributions have been recognised with awards, including the Anugerah Perkhidmatan Cemerlang (2023), Anugerah Khidmat Terpuji, and the Ahli Darjah Kinabalu (ADK) (2021).
