RESEARCH INTEREST
I began researching in smaller vertebrates upon joining Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia and later UMS. These include freshwater fish, understorey birds, and herpetofauna, which are mostly frogs and snakes., My students work on these animals for their projects. I later moved into working with larger verterbates with supports from various organisations and grants, including the establishment of an NGO - the Borneo Rhino Alliance. My current research interest is distribution and conservation of Sabah,s large vertebrates ( especially crocodile, rhino, banteng). I work with the Sabah Wildlife Department, UMS Faculty of Sustainable Agriculture Sabah Forestry Department and/through the Borneo Rhino Alliance to carry out research and conservation actions through research and ART (Advanced Reproductive Technology). Institutional support includes Malaysian agencies: MARDI, Agro-Biotech Institute of Malaysia, UPM, IIUM and UKM, and International bodies: Institute of Zoo and Wildlife Research (Germany), Wildlife Research Centre (Kyoto Uni), Tokyo Univ of Agriculture, Avantea Laboratories (Italy) and Morula Laboratories (Indonesia). The general plan is to establish protocols for gamete harvesting, cell cultures, production of embryos, cryopreservation, and conservation breeding. The current target species are Sumatran rhino and the Bornean Banteng, while other species will included later. In the field, my team and I work to monitor movements and distribution of wild banteng to support the ART program. I also support program to downlist the saltwater crocodile from its current position at Appendix I in the CITES to Appendix II, which allows for harvesting and utilization. My students are now working on attractants for luring wildlife for remote observation. I also work in applied biology, especially in the management of parks, protected areas and human-wildlife conflicts. My research interests drive me into working as environmental and wildlife biology consultants, mostly on terrestrial habitats, including insular habitats.
