B. Mabel Manjaji Matsumoto, PhD., is an Associate Professor at the Borneo Marine Research Institute (BMRI), Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS).

She teaches undergraduate marine science courses and serves as the lead supervisor to five doctoral candidates, twelve master students, and more than fifty bachelor students.

She is an accomplished and leading researcher whose work bridges science and policy. Her distinguished portfolio of completed and ongoing studies is valued at RM5.3 million, encompassing six research projects led by her, including one currently active, and contributions to eight major projects, three of which are ongoing. Supported by 26 competitive research grants and reflected in 151 scholarly publications across more than 30 scientific journals, her work provides robust scientific insights that inform evidence-based policy, strategic planning, and sustainable development.

She is the Founding Head of the Coastal Connections Living Lab, and the Chief Editor of the Borneo Journal of Marine Science and Aquaculture. She also serves as a member of Malaysia’s National Technical Working Group for the Management and Conservation of Sharks (Malaysia NPOA Sharks), since 2019, is a member of the IUCN Snapper, Seabream and Grunt Specialist Group, and sits on more than ten other scientific committees, including the Sabah Biodiversity Council.
