Abbas Ibrahim Mbulwa, Ph.D., is a senior lecturer at Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) and an experienced communications engineer and researcher. He is originally from Tanzania. He pursued his engineering studies at UMS, Malaysia, where he earned a Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) in Computer Engineering. Dr. Abbas later obtained his Ph.D. in Computer Engineering from UMS, specializing in mobility and handover in 5G and beyond networks.
From 2015 to 2019, he served as a research and teaching assistant at UMS, working on various computer engineering topics such as tomography, calculus, engineering programming, and computer architecture and design. From 2018 to 2025, he worked as a wireless communications engineer at Inferno Network and RapidMode Sdn. Bhd. in Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia, where his work focused on RF transmission, networking, and radio systems engineering for the PI1M/NADI initiative of the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) in the western state of Sabah. In 2022, he was appointed as a graduate research assistant at UMS for a period of two years, during which he conducted research on mobility management in 5G. He is currently a senior lecturer (assistant professor) in electronic and computer engineering at the Faculty of Engineering, UMS. He also serves as a reviewer for several top conferences and journals, including IEEE TVET, IEEE WCL, IEEE COMML, and IEEE ACCESS.
He has received several recognitions, including a Bronze Medal at the 2024 Malaysia Technology Expo (MTE) International Innovation Awards (IIA), a Best Paper Award from the IEEE Malaysia ComSoc/VTS Joint Chapter for publications in IEEE journals, magazines, and letters in 2023, and both a Gold Medal and a Best Invention Award at the UMS Innovation Competition (PEREKA) in 2022.
His research interests include communications, next-generation communication systems and networks, mobility optimization, resource allocation and optimization, signal processing, Internet of Things (IoT), smart sensing, efficient computing systems, and applications of artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI/ML).
