Dr Syed Sharizman is an Associate Professor of Medicine and currently the Deputy Dean of Postgraduate & Research, Faculty of Medicine & Health Sciences, Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS). Attained his MBBCh BAO (Ireland) in 2005, Master of Public Health (MPH) and Doctor of Public Health (DrPH) [level 8 MQF] from UKM, afterwards gazetted as a Public Health Medicine Specialist in 2016 and afterwards registered under National Specialist Registry.
Dr Syed’s career began as a House Officer at Queen Elizabeth Hospital and Likas Hospital, Kota Kinabalu, Sabah. Then as Medical Officer in Charge in Semporna District Health Office and later promoted as Director of Kinabatangan Hospital. After completing his post-graduate studies, he was assigned as the Senior Principal Assistant Director and Head Unit for Dengue/Zika/Chikungunya in the Vector-borne Disease Sector underseeing the National Dengue Control Program, Disease Control Division, Head Quarters Ministry of Health, Putrajaya.
He began his career as an academician in July 2018 by joining the Faculty of Medicine & Health Sciences, Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS). He is also one of the editors board members for PLOS One (Scopus Q1), Frontier Public Health (Scopus Q2), Global Journal of Public Health Medicine, Medical Technology and Public Health Journal and Borneo Epidemiology Journal. He has a special interest in the epidemiology of communicable and non-communicable diseases and has more than 100 publications in SCOPUS. This also includes multiple grants in the area of interest. Latest, his team obtained SATREPS grant for zoonotic malaria, with Dr Syed as one of the project sub leaders.
He was also Head of the National Conjoint for Public Health Medicine (2021-2022). President of Persatuan Perubatan Desa Sabah (PERDESA) (current) and Secretary for Malaysian Association of Epidemiology (MAE) (2019-2022). Besides that, he is also on the steering committee for the National Postgraduate Medical Curriculum, Malaysia.
Internationally he is also a member of the International Epidemiological Association and an expert and course coordinator with SAFETYNET or South Asia Field Epidemiology and Technology Network among others.
Dr Syed is always open to collaboration among others, currently having collaborations with counterparts nationally and internationally such as in Japan, Korea, Philippines and others. He is motivated to ensure there is development in his medical profession and academic career.
Professor Madya Dr. Syed Sharizman Bin Syed Abdul Rahim holds Doktor Kesihatan Masyarakat from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia , among other qualifications, and has established themselves as a respected expert in their field.
