Institut Marin Borneo, UMS
Dr. Nazia is a Senior Lecturer at Universiti Malaysia Sabah, holding a PhD in Molecular Biology from Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) and a BSc in Marine Biology from Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT). As a molecular ecologist and certified Open Water Diver, her research expertise lies in the conservation genetics of marine and freshwater species. Her current research investigates the genetic diversity of the swamp eel (Monopterus albus), a species vital for the sustainable management of wild stocks. Dr. Nazia also spearheads river restoration initiatives in Sabah, focusing on fish species barcoding and the repopulation of giant freshwater prawns to enhance local livelihoods. In addition, she is involved in environmental DNA (eDNA) studies on sharks and rays, aiming to inform conservation efforts and improve our understanding of these key marine species.
