Makdi Masnoddin is a passionate educator and researcher who has devoted his entire academic and professional journey to Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS). As a proud graduate, he earned his undergraduate, master's, and doctoral degrees at UMS, focussing on Biotechnology. He earned his Master’s degree in 2012, concentrating on Plant Tissue Culture, and subsequently completed a Ph.D. in Biotechnology with a specialisation in molecular microbiology.

In accordance with his dedication to scientific excellence, Makdi also undertook specialised training at the Malaysia Genome and Vaccine Institute (MGVI), Bangi, where he enhanced his expertise in molecular biology and genomic technologies—bolstering his skills in microbial genomics and protein function analysis.

He is currently a lecturer at the Preparatory Centre for Science and Technology (PPST), UMS, with research interests that include molecular biotechnology, environmental microbiology, and science education. He has focused on the clonal propagation of Paphiopedilum rothschildianum, a rare orchid species native to Mount Kinabalu, along with the structural and functional analysis of hypothetical proteins from Antarctic microorganisms, specifically Glaciozyma antarctica and Pedobacter cryoconitis.

Furthermore, Makdi is highly involved in STEM education research in Sabah, spearheading initiatives such as “Enhancing Student Enrolment in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) through Promotional and Awareness Programs in Public Schools across Sabah” and performing scientific research such as “Analysis of the Factors Contributing to the Decline in Academic Achievement and Interest in Science Among Secondary School Students in Sabah.”

His lasting dedication to UMS, both as a graduate and as an academic, showcases his commitment to promoting scientific research and educational development in Malaysia, particularly in under-represented and rural communities.
