Ts. Dr. Affendy Bin Hassan

Ts. Dr. Affendy bin Hassan was born in Kunak, Sabah on 23th May 1983. He earned his Diploma Forestry, and Bachelor Forestry Science in 2003 and 2005, respectively at Universiti Putra Malaysia. After that, he furthered his Master Science (Forestry) (2007-2009) at Universiti Malaysia Sabah. He then went on to earn his PhD (2014-2017) in Plant roots in intercropping at University of Copenhagen, Denmark.

Dr. Affendy started his career as a tutor in March 2006 and then lecturer at the School of International Tropical Forestry (now is Faculty of Tropical Forestry), Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) since September 2010. He was promoted to Senior Lecturer on 2th February 2021. In administration, he was the Head of Programme of Forest Plantation and Agroforestry (17th April 2019 - 19th January 2025). Currently, he is the Deputy Dean (Research and Innovation) of Faculty of Tropical Forestry since 20th January 2025.

In research and innovation, his research interest lies in the plant roots, root methods in forest plantation an agroforestry. He is the head of Research Group of Forest Silviculture and Protection in UMS. He was awarded research grant both as project leader and co-researcher amounting more than RM 1.2 millions. He published more than 50 Scopus indexed scientific publications. In book publication, he wrote book ‘Misai Kucing Peluang Menjana Pendapatan - Alaf 21 publisher’, and ‘Forestry Camp - Guide and Practical - UMS publisher’, and An Introduction of Forest Plantation and Agroforestry.

Throughout his career, Dr. Affendy has been the recipient of the following Awards and Distinctions: Anugerah Perkhidmatan Terpuji (2011), Anugerah Perkhidmatan Cemerlang (2012), Anugerah Jasa Bakti (2016), Anugerah Penyelidik Harapan FPT (2022), Anugerah Ketua Program Inovatif FPT (2023), Gold Medal ITEX (2021), Gold Medal PECIPTA (2022). He awarded from the Sabah State for Anugerah Top 3 Teknologis Sabah (2023). He received the highest international award Silver Medal for Smallfarm Fertilizer Spreader in iENA-Nuremberg, Germany (2023).

In uniform service, Dr. Affendy was commissioned as officer of Pasukan Simpanan Sukarela TLDM (Royal Malaysian Navy Volunteer Reserve) at KD SRI LIKAS, Pangkalan TLDM Teluk Sepanggar, Kota Kinabalu since 20th August 2010. He was appointed as Leftenan Madya PSSTLDM (since 11th November 2019), Leftenan PSSTLDM (since 23rd Jan 2024), and as Pegawai Laksana (cum deputy Commanding Officer) since 18th August 2021. Due to his service over twelve years in the PSSTLDM, he was awarded Pingat Kebaktian (P.K) on 29th December 2023.

In Non Governmental Organizations (NGOs), he is the founder and prresident of Malaysian Society of Agroforestry (MySAF) since Oktober 2021. He also was the Deputy President of Malaysian Society of Soil Science (2022-2023).
