Profesor Madya Dr. Kartini Binti Saibeh

I am an academic and researcher at the Faculty of Tropical Forestry, Universiti Malaysia Sabah. I hold a Ph.D. in Botany from the University of Reading (United Kingdom), alongside a Master’s and Bachelor’s degree in Botany from Universiti Sains Malaysia (Malaysia). With over three decades of experience, my research focuses on plant diversity, taxonomy, and ecology within the hyper-diverse ecosystems of Sabah, Malaysian Borneo. My key areas of specialization include: • Plant Taxonomy & Systematics: I am extensively involved in discovering, describing, and mapping new plant species within the family Araceae in Sabah, having authored or co-authored at least 16 new species and botanical combinations. • Phytoremediation: My work investigates the use of native plants (such as Typha angustifolia) for treating acid mine drainage and managing heavy metal accumulation, with a specific focus on the environmental rehabilitation of the abandoned Mamut Copper Mine in Ranau, Sabah. • Ecology & Conservation: I conduct rapid vulnerability assessments of Araceae within Kinabalu Park and other protected forest reserves to inform conservation strategies. • Pollination Biology: I investigate insect interactions with Araceae inflorescences to better understand the reproductive ecology of these species.
