Professor Dr. Rayner Alfred

Professor Ts. Dr. Rayner Alfred is a distinguished Malaysian computer scientist, academic and technology leader at Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), internationally recognised for his contributions to Artificial Intelligence (AI), machine learning, big data analytics, knowledge discovery and data science. He received his BSc in Computer Science from Polytechnic University, New York, graduating cum laude and among the top 5% of his class, followed by an MSc from Western Michigan University and a PhD in Computer Science from the University of York, United Kingdom. His research spans AI, machine learning, deep learning, natural language processing, computer vision and large language models, with interdisciplinary applications in aquaculture, agriculture, healthcare, environmental monitoring, tourism and intelligent decision systems. Through the Creative Advanced Machine Intelligence Research Centre (CAiMIRC), he has contributed significantly to advancing AI research, innovation and human-capital development in Sabah and Malaysia. Professor Alfred has been recognised among the World’s Top 2% Scientists in the Stanford–Elsevier global ranking and the World Top 5% Scientists in the 2025 SciRank Global Registry, reflecting the international impact of his research. Beyond academia, he served on the Board of Directors of MIMOS Berhad from 2019 to 2026, contributing to Malaysia’s national R&D and technology development. He has also served as an Independent Non-Executive Director of Payments Network Malaysia Sdn. Bhd. (PayNet), Malaysia’s national payments network, where Bank Negara Malaysia is a significant shareholder. Through more than three decades in computing, Professor Alfred has built a distinctive career combining research excellence, AI innovation, academic leadership and national technology governance, positioning him as an important contributor to Malaysia’s AI and digital transformation ecosystem.
