Fakulti Sains dan Teknologi, UMS

Dr. Chong Khim Phin is a Professor at the Faculty of Science and Technology, Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) and a Fellow of the Academy of Sciences Malaysia (ASM) under the Biological, Agricultural and Environmental Sciences discipline. He obtained his PhD in Plant Science from the University of Nottingham, United Kingdom. He currently serves as the Chairperson of the ASM Sabah Chapter and as a Senate Member (Professor) of UMS. Professor Chong's research focuses on the interactions between pathogenic and beneficial plant-associated microorganisms, particularly bacteria and fungi. His research group conducts multidisciplinary studies integrating genetics, molecular biology, metabolomics and other omics approaches to elucidate the complex mechanisms underlying plant–microbe interactions. These studies contribute to the development of innovative and sustainable strategies for improving plant health, enhancing crop resilience and managing plant diseases. His current research interests encompass major crop, vegetable and fruit diseases, with particular emphasis on sustainable disease management. He is actively involved in the discovery and development of biological control agents derived from mycorrhizal fungi, Trichoderma spp., actinomycetes, and lactic acid bacteria. In addition, his research includes the development and application of biochar, biofertilizers and organic fertilizers produced from oil palm biomass and other agricultural wastes to promote sustainable agriculture and improve soil health.
