Fakulti Perubatan Dan Sains Kesihatan, UMS
Dr. Kamruddin Ahmed graduated with a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MBBS) from the University of Dhaka, Bangladesh. He earned his Diploma in Tropical Medicine, and PhD from Nagasaki University, Japan. Currently he is a Professor of Microbiology, and Director of Borneo Medical and Health Research Centre at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Universiti Malaysia Sabah. Since 2019 and 2022, he is a Visiting Professor of Nagasaki University and Oita University, Japan, respectively. Dr. Ahmed successfully served as a faculty member in Kuwait University, Kuwait; Bilkent University, Turkey; Oita University, and Nagasaki University, Japan.
Dr. Ahmed is serving as an editor, and a reviewer of several reputed journals. Since 2021, he is the Editor-in-Chief of the Borneo Journal of Medical Sciences, published by the UMS Press. During his tenure the journal has been internationalized by appointing Editors from four continents with various expertise. Furthermore, the journal has been indexed in MyJournal, and International Committee of Medical Journal Editors. He is progressing satisfactorily to enlist Borneo Journal of Medical Sciences in Scopus and Pubmed within a three-year period.
Dr. Ahmed’s research is focused on the local needs such as zoonotic malaria, tuberculosis, leptospirosis, cholera, arboviruses, and undiscovered zoonoses. The studies involved are molecular epidemiology and diagnostics. These are the corner stone of prevention by policy decision and treatment by early diagnosis. His lab has established collaboration with several reputed universities such as the University of Oxford, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, National University of Singapore, and Nagasaki University. He has published over 165 papers in peer-reviewed journals and wrote chapters in books. At present Dr. Ahmed’s citation number is 3,925, h-index is 35, and i-10 index is 111. He has been invited to give 14 invited talks in international conferences and 15 talks in universities in several countries. Till now 7 PhD, and 7 master students have graduated under his direct supervision. Many students from other labs and universities are benefiting from getting trainings in his labs. He regularly organizes seminars and workshop inviting international experts. Recently D. Ahmed has successfully organized the 16th International Congress of Physiological Anthropology 2023 as a Chairman.
Dr. Ahmed has served and is serving several committees inside and outside of UMS. In 2023 Dr. Ahmed has been appointed as a member of the National Zoonotic Malaria Technical Committee, MoH Malaysia, and the Executive Board Member of Japanese Society of Tropical Medicine since 2010.
Dr. Ahmed is committed to obtain a million-dollar international grant which will be invested in talent and infrastructure development of the Borneo Medical and Health Research Centre. He has plan to start a program in Tropical Medicine at UMS.
