Professor Dr. Asmiaty Amat

Professor Dr. Asmiaty Amat is a senior academician at Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) with an extensive and distinguished career spanning nearly three decades in the field of Malay studies. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Malay Literature, a Master of Arts in Malay Literary Criticism (Kritikan Sastera Melayu), and a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Malay Studies (Pengajian Melayu), reflecting her deep scholarly grounding in the discipline.

She commenced her academic career at UMS in 1996 as a tutor in Malay Literature and Society. Later that same year, she pursued her Master’s degree at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), which she completed in 1997. Upon her return to UMS, she continued her academic trajectory, contributing consistently to the university’s teaching, research, and academic leadership.

Over the years, Prof. Dr. Asmiaty has established herself as a committed scholar and educator, with sustained contributions to curriculum development, student mentorship, and institutional advancement. Her academic progression reflects both her scholarly rigour and her enduring dedication to the discipline.

She has made significant scholarly contributions through her research, publications, and editorial work .Her research and publications are primarily situated within the domains of social sciences, Malay literature (Sastera Melayu), and literary criticism, where she has contributed to the scholarly and critical discourse of Malay studies and also social sciences at both the national and institutional levels. She has authored several scholarly books, among others are Bugis Sabah, Novel-Novel Penulis Sabah dalam Esei Kritikan, and Mediasi dalam Perkembangan Novel Sabah. She also serves as Chief Editor of MANU, the journal of the Pusat Penataran Ilmu dan Bahasa.
