Dr. Mohammad Amil Zulhilmi Bin Benjamin

Institut Biologi Tropika Dan Pemuliharaan, UMS

Dr. Amil is a researcher in pharmacology and pharmacognosy, with a strong interest in underutilised tropical plants and mushrooms as sources of bioactive compounds for health-related applications. His work focuses on three main areas: toxicity, efficacy, and mechanism of action. His research uses both in vitro and in vivo approaches to evaluate the pharmacological potential of natural product-derived extracts and compounds, including gastroprotective and hepatoprotective effects, among others. He studies how these materials act at biochemical, tissue, and molecular levels, including changes in endogenous antioxidant enzymes, tissue responses, and selected protein markers through methods such as immunohistochemistry and Western blot analysis. He also examines their safety profile through toxicity studies, while relating their biological effects to phytochemical composition and metabolic pathways. Through this work, Dr. Amil supports the scientific development of underutilised tropical bioresources for potential use in natural health products, functional ingredients, and related applications.
