Dr. Wirawati Ngui Yi Xe

Dr. Wirawati Ngui Yi Xe is an academician in the Faculty of Education and Sports Studies at Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS). She holds a PhD and Master of Education in TESL from UMS, alongside a Bachelor of Education (Hons) in TESOL from the University of Auckland, New Zealand. Dr. Wirawati holds institutional appointments as a Young Fellow at the Higher Education Leadership Academy (AKEPT) under Malaysia's Ministry of Higher Education and Fellow at the Confucius Institute UMS. Her research focuses on technology-enhanced language learning, alternative assessment, teacher education, and rural literacy. As a lead researcher, she currently heads an Early Career Fundamental Research Grant Scheme (FRGS-EC) project on empowering rural Sabah pupils through Augmented Reality (AR) storybooks, alongside a grant investigating Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (TCSOL) approaches for non-Chinese primary pupils. Additionally, her grant-funded work includes pre-service teachers' adoption of e-Portfolios for professional development. Dr. Wirawati is an active supervisor for both PhD and Master’s candidates. Her editorial roles includes serving as Deputy Chief Editor for the International Journal on e-Learning Practice (IJELP) and peer-reviewing for Scopus-indexed and national journals like Heliyon and IJCALLT. She has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals, contributed conference papers, and authored the guidebook How to Ace Your Practicum: A Guide for TESL Students. Recognized for her contributions to educational technology and innovative teaching, Dr. Wirawati holds registered copyrights for the PROfolio Module and e-Portfolio for Academic Writing. Her innovations have earned top accolades, including a Gold Award at the International Innovation Competition on Future Education (IICFE 2025), first place at UMS’s Teaching and Learning Innovation Excellence Awards (AKIPP 2024), and multiple gold medals at innovation competitions such as LaRIC, CITREX, and IUCEL.
