Professor Madya Dr. Jaya Seelan A/l Sathiya Seelan
Institut Biologi Tropika Dan Pemuliharaan, UMS
Dr. Jaya Seelan Sathiya Seelan completed his PhD. in year 2015 from Clark University (Boston, United States) under the supervision of World Famous leading Mycologist Prof David Hibbett. He is a trained mycologist in the field of mushroom systematic using traditional techniques and molecular biology. He joined the Institute for Tropical Biology and Conservation, Universiti Malaysia Sabah as a Tutor in June 2008 and promoted to senior lecturer in August 2015. He is now the Principal Investigator in Mushroom Research at UMS. Dr Jaya's research interest is on the biodiversity of wild mushrooms mushroom with primary focus on phylogenetic systematics. He diversified his research into breeding and cultivation of edible mushrooms to warrant food and nutrition security and validating the bioactivity of traditional used mushrooms from Malaysia. Dr. Jaya has published over 30 papers in cited and refereed journals. Since 2015, he serves as the mushroom identification expert for JKNS in the cases of suspected mushroom poisoning. He is the lead mycologist contact on the Sabah Health Department (JKNS) for mushroom poisoning and took part in the “Guidelines on Public Health Management of Mushroom Poisoning in Malaysia”. Also, he is registered Mycologist under MYBIS. He has also received prestigious International recognition as KFAS and JICA Fellowship in 2015-2019. He has served as Managing editor for Journal of Tropical Biology and Conservation since 2016-2018. Currently, he is the Chief-Editor for Journal of Tropical Biology and Conservation. Dr. Jaya also an active member of Genetic Association of Malaysia (GAM) and Mushroom Association of Malaysia (MMRA).
